White Chocolate Door County Cherry Cookies
Growing up in Wisconsin, late summer always meant cherries from Door County. I can remember my mom talking about the great health benefits that cherries offer as she selected cherry products in the grocery store.
The August Cookie of the Month is inspired by Great Lakes summers, Door County cherry orchards, and the abundance of late summer: White Chocolate Door County Cherry Cookies.
Creamy white chocolate and tart Montmorency Door County cherries create a cookie that's rich, bright, and unmistakably Wisconsin. Each bite is buttery and soft, with tart bursts of cherries and bites of creamy white chocolate.
You may have heard about the national cherry shortage caused by frost and poor growing conditions this year. Fortunately, Door County has had a successful cherry harvest. Door County produces 7 to 12 million pounds of tart cherries each year. This accounts for 95% of all sour cherries grown in Wisconsin. Our state produces four percent of the nation’s Montmorency cherries.
It has been months since I’ve seen Door County cherries at Woodman’s, our local grocery store, so I placed an order directly from Country Ovens in Door County. To my delight, the cherries were delivered just a few days later.
As you know, we use Wisconsin-sourced ingredients whenever possible. These cookies will feature:

Vanilla from Cathy's Pure Vanilla Extract, made by Cathy Mayr of County Line Produce just north of Madison, Wisconsin
Free range Grade A eggs from Milo’s Poultry Farms in Bonduel, Wisconsin
