July Cookie of the Month: Maple Firecracker Cups
The July Cookie of the Month has arrived, and it is a patriotic twist on a classic favorite: Maple Firecracker Cups.
These cookies begin with a maple-sweetened peanut butter dough and are topped with a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup. The combination of peanut butter, chocolate, and pure Wisconsin maple sugar creates a cookie that feels right at home at summer picnics, family gatherings, and Independence Day celebrations.
The idea came together after we finished setting up our booth at the Edgerton Night Market on Friday. I mentioned to my husband that it was time to decide on July's Cookie of the Month. Given the enthusiasm for our Strawberry Lemonade cookies at the market, I was brainstorming red, white, and blue flavor combinations.
His suggestion was simple: "Why don't you make those peanut butter cookies with the peanut butter cup on top?"
I wasn't entirely sure which cookie he meant. Was he thinking of peanut butter blossoms with Hershey's Kisses? Or the peanut butter cookies with a Rolo tucked inside? Either way, he thought a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup cookie would be perfect for Independence Day.
The more I thought about it, the more I liked the idea. Reese's Peanut Butter Cups are an American classic, produced by Hershey, a Pennsylvania company. Pennsylvania played a central role in the founding of our nation, and the idea felt like a fitting tribute to the 21 Pennsylvania ancestors I have identified who served during the Revolutionary War.
One question remained: ingredients and costs.
Before committing to the recipe, I wanted to make sure these cookies would still qualify as "Something Special from Wisconsin." After running the numbers, I found that 53 percent of the ingredient cost comes from Wisconsin-made products thanks to the addition of locally produced maple sugar.
Maple pairs beautifully with peanut butter, adding a subtle depth of flavor that elevates this patriotic take on the classic peanut butter blossom.
As always, we use Wisconsin-sourced ingredients whenever possible. These cookies will feature:

Free range Grade A eggs from Milo’s Poultry Farms in Bonduel, Wisconsin
